We have just released our August 2022 Newsletter.  Read on to see what we have in store this month.</p>

<p>Introducing new products from Megger and Simpson, two brands that continue to innovate and improve upon their product functionality.</p>
<p>The demand for electric vehicles continues to increase rapidly. This has caused a ground swell of installations of new EV charging stations for public use across the country. Chargers need to go through routine inspections. These inspections help to assess their safety and alert the inspector if maintenance needs to be performed. This can be done by using the Megger's EVCC300 EV Charger Checker.</p>
<p>If you're looking for a battery tester for more than checking lead-acid and ion-lithium batteries take a look at Megger's BITE5. This unit also tests NiCD batteries.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Megger EVCC300 Electric Vehicle Charger Checker</font></strong></h3>

<p>The new EVCC300 introduces a new and convenient way of checking Electric Vehicle charge points. A simple all in one concept provides an easy to use solution to check both the safety and operation of level 1 and two phase level 2 EV chargers. The instrument is ideal for those wishing to perform a check on an EV charger following manufacture, installation or repair, or just part of a maintenance schedule / inspection.</p>

<p><strong>Features&#58;</strong></p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Megger BITE5 Battery Tester</font></strong></h3>

<p>The BITE5 is a battery tester that will test lead acid batteries, NiCD batteries as well as lithium-ion batteries. The BITE5 will measure and record battery voltage, impedance, and temperature. The BITE5 also supports discharge testing. It will measure the voltage and current throughout the discharge cycle. The BITE5 can also measure the impedance and temperature throughout the discharge cycle.</p>

<p><strong>Battery impedance testing</strong></p>
<p>The BITE5 will measure cell impedance, cell voltage, and temperature. The recorded data can be trended on the unit’s touch screen. View the trended data of each test or trend the data of each cell. Set pass, warning, and fail limits for voltage and impedance. Record the ripple voltage, ripple current, and float current and transfer the recorded data via USB or via an SD card to the PowerDB software, then create custom reports and automated analysis.</p>

<p><strong>Battery discharge testing</strong></p>
<p>The BITE5 will record voltage, DC current, impedance, and temperature of each cell throughout the entire discharge test. Measure the average impedance at the end of the commissioning test and use this as a limit for future impedance tests. Trend the recorded data on the BITE5 touch screen and view the trended data of each test, or trend the discharge of each cell. Transfer the recorded data via USB or via an SD card to the PowerDB software, then create custom reports.</p>

<p><strong>Solsar systems</strong></p>
<p>Measure and record combiner DC voltages. Measure the input and output of inverters. Test the lithium-ion batteries.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Ram Meter 20M Shunt Series</font></strong></h3>

<p>Ram Meter Inc. DC (direct current) instrument shunts are used to extend the range of ammeters whenever the current to be measured is too large to be passed through the instrument - usually currents over 50 amperes. Therefore the shunt is a diverter which is used to "shunt" the majority of the current around the indicating instrument. The shunt is essentially a specially designed resistor which delivers a millivolt output (to a millivolt meter or instrument) in proportion to the current flowing through the resistor.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Phares ZS09P1-DF Zero Speed Sensor</font></strong></h3>

<p>The Phares ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor is a self-contained device that combines sensor and switch for use in over speed, under speed, or zero speed applications. It senses magnetic or high iron content targets, depending on model #. Outputs are isolated and can be easily integrated with any controller or existing system. It is about the size of a prox switch, but incorporates intelligent speed sensing circuitry not found in simple on/off devices. Use the ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor for switching control circuit loads up to 5 amps.  When motion is either detected or reaches set-point (depending upon application), the relay output changes state. It remains in this state until under speed or zero speed condition occurs (depending upon application).</p>

<p>In every truck, on every trouble call, there’s one tool crews reach for first to ensure their safety. That’s the <a href="https://www.rammeter.com/amprobe-instruments-tic-300-pro-ac-voltage-detector-30-122-000-acv-122kv" target="_blank"> Amprobe TIC 300 PRO</a>. It’s the go-to tool for underground crews servicing secondary power lines for a large US utility company in the Northeast. The crew’s work takes them down manholes under historic cities where the infrastructure is aging and the problems are frequent.</p>
<p>As lead engineer responsible for troubleshooting, John K. can get calls anytime day or night from one of 30 underground crews. When a cable installer or splicer encounters out-of-the ordinary electrical problems on the job, they call in a “trouble man”. And when the trouble man has questions on how equipment operates, he calls John. John constantly stresses the importance of safety to all the crews. He tells them to always assume it’s live until they know for sure. Whether they’re working on 120V, 240V, 5kV or greater, on cables, transformers, or switches,they begin the job by checking to see if the problem area is live or dead. That’s the job of the Amprobe TIC 300 PRO non-contact voltage detector.</p>
<p>Approximately 300 TIC tracers are in use throughout the system. Every crew carries at least one and usually two units in the truck. The cable installers, cable splicers, and trouble men all use them daily, often multiple times each day. They might see an exposed conductor, or a cable that’s been cut off or broken. Sometimes one crew starts a job on their shift and another picks it on the next shift, and they need to know for sure what they are walking into.</p>

<p>Lights flash and the Amprobe TIC 300 PRO beeps with increasing frequency as it nears a source of electricity, leaving the user no doubt whether the area is live or not. They can also quickly track where fault lines between two functioning points.</p>
<p>The crews like how simple the Amprobe TIC 300 PRO is to use. One bright yellow button turns it on or off. With another button, the user can select either low or high voltage. Buttons are easy to press with heavy gloves, which is important because the crew must wear gloves and full PPE.</p>
<p>The TIC tracers get thrown around in the truck, but the tools are durable enough to take the rough treatment. John has seen some units last more than 20 years.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Laurel Electronics L40 Universal Input Digital Panel Meter</font></strong></h3>

<p>The Laurel Electronics L40 is a low-cost, universal meter for 65 user-selectable analog input signal types and ranges. These include DC voltage and current, AC RMS voltage and current, process signals (4-20 mA, 0-10V), thermocouple (10 types, °C or °F), RTD (6 types, °C or °F), thermistors (NTC or PTC), resistance (0-5k or 0-50k ohms), and potentiometer inputs. The same meter handles all of these signal types with no need for a plug-in signal conditioner board. The meter's universal power supply accepts voltages from 18 to 265V, AC or DC, so that power can be 24 DCV or AC power in any country. The meter conforms to the popular 1/8 DIN size standard and features four 0.56" (14.2 mm) high red LED digits. The display is user scalable for input types other than temperature.</p>
<p>The base L40, as shipped by Laurel, is set up so that a 400 Vac input reads 400. To change to another signal type or range, pry off the meter faceplate, push out the electronics, and place jumpers as illustrated in the manual. The jumper positions are well labeled, and the jumpers have a large, easy-to-grasp handle. Also make software selections using front panel keys. If you want Laurel or your distributor to set jumpers and do the front panel programming for you, order the FS option.</p>
<p>Extensive software features add flexibility to this low cost meter. Programmable features include five levels of display brightness, min and max capture, dual scaling selectable by an external control input, a deadband around 0 for AC measurements, a moving average digital filter, a "count by" function, hysteresis for alarm operation, a user-configurable fast access menu, and selectable password protection. Further flexibility is provided by 1 or 2 optional output boards, which can be added at any time.</p>

<p>The Hioki PD3129-10 is designed to safely detect the phase sequence in three-phase circuits for electrical installation and maintenance.       <title>Choosing the Right Ground Resistance Tester</title>

There are a wide variety of ground resistance testers available on the market today. These vary in design, features, and complexity, and include small handheld models as well as larger field instruments that are often packaged as part of a complete kit. These products also range in price, from a few hundred up to several thousand dollars. In this article, we discuss several critical questions to consider when selecting a ground resistance tester. Our goal is to help guide you in choosing the instrument best suited to your specific application and requirements.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Do you need to regularly test sites for soil resistivity?</font></strong></h3>
<p>The first, and probably most important, question is whether your current or future needs require soil resistivity testing, because it will determine the type of ground resistance tester you will need. For example, if your work involves the design and/or installation of new grounding systems, soil resistivity testing is a necessity. An instrument designed for 4-pole testing (also referred to as 4-point testing) is required for this application. A basic low-cost 4-pole tester provides measurement results in ohms. You can then use this reading to manually calculate soil resistivity, which is usually expressed in ohm/centimeters or ohm/meters.</P>
<P>More sophisticated instruments include built-in formulas for calculating soil resistivity using the Wenner or the Schlumberger method. If you regularly need to perform 4-pole testing, consider purchasing an instrument that automatically calculates soil resistivity. This will save time and eliminate potential math errors.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">What type(s) of ground systems will you test?</font></strong></h3>
<p>the obvious follow-up question involves the types of grounding systems you will test. Will this include small systems such as residential, or larger and more complex systems such as commercial, industrial, telecommunication, or electric utilities? To illustrate the importance of this question, let’s consider a typical small site with a grounding system consisting of a copper rod or two, driven into the ground and connected to the service entrance.</p>

<p>In the above illustration, if the house has not yet been connected to the power line, a basic 3-pole ground resistance tester (or a 4-pole instrument configured for 3-pole testing) will suffice for measuring the resistance of the house ground rod. If the house has been connected to the power line, a clamp-on ground resistance tester can measure the house ground rod resistance. If you choose a 3- or 4-pole instrument for this, one point to bear in mind is the distances required for auxiliary rod placement. For example, performing a Fall-of-Potential test on a single electrode rod driven 8 feet deep requires at least 80 to 100 foot test leads. If more ground rods are used, the distance requirement increases.  Ground resistance test kits are available that include the measurement instrument, the auxiliary electrodes, and leads. Typical lead lengths provided in these kits are 150, 300, and 500 feet. We suggest selecting a ground resistance test kit with leads at least one size longer than your immediate need. So if 150 feet is required, a kit that 
includes 300 foot leads will provide a good margin of error. For larger sites with multiple rods or ground grids, consider kits that provide 500 foot leads.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Does the test site have high soil resistivity and/or requires long test leads?</font></strong></h3>
<p>Another question is whether the soil resistivity is high in the area that you will be testing, or whether the distance required for the auxiliary rods to perform Fall-of-Potential testing is unusually long. If the answer to either or both of these questions is yes, and you intend to perform Fall-of-Potential and/or soil resistivity tests, you must consider the instrument’s injection current and test voltage. Typical injection currents range from a few milliamps up to several hundred mA. High soil resistivity usually produces high contact resistance for the auxiliary electrodes. This can be of concern when using lower-cost instruments that typically provide 10mA test current; so in this circumstance we recommend an instrument capable of delivering higher test current.</p>
<p>Before we leave the topic of auxiliary electrodes, note that clamp-on instruments do not require any auxiliary rods or leads. Another advantage is that you do not need to take the grounding system out of service to perform the test.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Is electromagnetic interference (EMI) present?</font></strong></h3>
<p>Another subject to consider is whether electromagnetic interference, or EMI, is present at the test site. EMI can result in unstable or inaccurate readings, particularly at lower test frequencies. The most common test frequency is 128Hz. Instruments that feature automatic test frequency selection can find the “cleanest” available frequency, which provides an advantage in high-EMI environments. Clamp-on instruments can also be effective in such locations, since they typically test at higher frequencies. Newer 
AEMC clamp-on models also offer test frequency selection.</p>
<p>Note that in some high-inductive environments lower test frequencies can produce more reliable results. </p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">How will you use the measurement data?</font></strong></h3>
<p>The choice of instrument can also depend on how you intend to use the data you obtain. For example, if you plan to save, analyze, and distribute your test results, data storage and report generation become important considerations. Newer and more 
advanced instruments, both 3- and 4-pole testers and clamp-on models, can store test results in internal memory. This data can then be downloaded and analyzed using software running on a computer, or via mobile apps for smartphones and tablets. This can be a very powerful tool for contractors conducting tests for clients. An added advantage for a mobile app is the ability to immediately send test results as an e-mail or text message.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">Do you need to test the bonding of grounding system components?</font></strong></h3>
<p>Finally, if you’re planning to test complex grounding system consisting of many components including a ground mat or grid, you will need to test the continuity of bonding between the various elements. This test is most often conducted using DC voltage and 
current. Several ground resistance testers provide this capability, with test currents up to a few hundred milliamps. In addition, a more complete test can be performed with a micro-ohmmeter. The advantage in using this instrument is its ability to test at high test 
currents up to 200A. This can expose problem areas not always revealed when testing with milliamp-range currents.</p>

<h3><strong><font color="blue">In Conclusion</font></strong></h3>
<p>Let’s take a moment to review:</p>
<ul>
<li>When deciding which ground resistance tester is right for you, consider whether or not you need an instrument that can measure soil resistivity.</li>
<li>If so, think about what types of ground systems you are likely to test.</li>
<li>Take into consideration the environmental factors at your potential test sites, such as high soil resistivity or EMI.</li> 
<li>Bear in mind how you plan to use the measurement data.</li> 
<li>If you need to measure complex grounding systems, consider an instrument that can perform continuity checking on the bonding between components.</li>
</ul>
